Dry Needling
What is Dry Needling?
Dry needling is an evidence-based treatment designed to relieve muscle pain, reduce tightness, and restore normal movement. It involves the use of very fine, sterile needles that are inserted directly into specific points within the muscle known as trigger points.
Trigger points are tight bands of muscle tissue that can develop due to overuse, poor posture, injury, or repetitive strain. These areas often feel like “knots” and can cause local discomfort or even refer pain to other parts of the body. For example, a trigger point in the shoulder can contribute to headaches or arm pain.
When a needle is inserted into a trigger point, it creates a response in the muscle known as a twitch response. This helps release the tension within the muscle, improve blood flow to the area, and reset how the muscle functions. As a result, pain decreases and movement becomes easier and more natural.
Despite the name, there is no medication injected during dry needling—the term “dry” simply refers to the needle itself.
Release of myofascial trigger points to reduce localized muscle tightness
Immediate reduction in pain through interruption of pain signaling pathways
Improved muscle length and range of motion by decreasing muscle hyperactivity
Enhanced local blood flow and metabolic exchange to support tissue healing
Reset of dysfunctional motor patterns and decreased protective muscle guarding
Faster recovery from acute strains and chronic overload by promoting normal muscle function
Complementary effect with other therapies (massage, stretching, strengthening) for longer-lasting result
